Hi and bye everyone... when I saw Jerry's note that we had more time to post pictures I went back and found a few that hadn't made the first cut, played with them some more, and fini. There are a few more on fotothing.

This one I love most because it is of my little sister when her boyfriend surprised her with a diamond at a Renaissance Fair not two months ago. The original picture (not mine) was very busy and showed a crowd around them, applauding. It is sweet but I wanted to just show them in a more romantic way.

Lisle Drake resides in the Hill Country of Texas. She says that each of her works represents one aspect or another of that magical art. She works with a wide range of media from pen and ink on paper to batik and other techniques on fabric. She also uses the computer as both a tool and medium. Lisle gets most of her ideas through dreams, and that her dreams tend to run in series, sometimes over many years. She says that each time a dream occurs she finds something new in the dream and she spends a lot of time capturing the memories either on paper or working directly in the machine. Her memories fill hundreds of sketch books and computer files, they are the raw material from which her finished works are made. She states
"I work principally with Photoshop, Painter and Illustrator, and my input devices are a high resolution scanner and a Wacom tablet. As I begin work on a new piece I make decisions about which elements are already in my archives and which will have to be created new. If new elements have to be created I might sketch the piece on paper and scan it in, or I might begin working in a Painter or Illustrator file using my Wacom tablet, or I might grab an old digital file and begin manipulating the element directly in Photoshop." This is an art both wondrous and gloriously playful.

I found her explanation of how she creates her art very interesting. It gave me a great idea to start my own dream sketch journal. I love this picture, is it a smile face or two birds looking down at a feather. At first I went right past this picture then I came back to it and examined it slowly and knew it had to be my final piece!

Hi Everyone.... We are in our final week of class... all work is due by the end of this upcoming week. I will be doing the grading on Friday, October 16th. You may add to any of the assignments you have submitted... even from the beginning, if you feel you could have done a better job on anything.

Hope you enjoyed this experience.... You have learned much about Web 2.0 power in taking this class.... the ability to create and post visual content, not only for your peers, but for the world to see both on the blog and in fotothing is a very powerful step forward.

Karin Kuhlmann is an artist who has gained much notoriety and awards for her artwork in recent years. Kuhlmann is best known for her exhibit of twelve pieces which she likes to refer to as “AbstraXness;” a term that she uses to describe her very abstract and algorithmic style within her collection. Originally from Germany, Kuhlmann has studied graphic design and photography as well having been a commercial artist and publicist. In 1996 she began utilizing the computer as an artistic tool and incorporated design elements by using Photoshop’s KPT5’s FraxFrame filter, giving her images more of an abstract quality. Kuhlmann has said “Like the surrealists and some abstractionists I prefer to utilize 'Automatism' for my creative processes in order to release my inner pictures.” She also feels that; “Mathematical art is - although it seems to be a contradiction in terms - a very intuitive and individual kind of work." Ansgard Thomson

Ansgard Thomson was born in a part of Germany in 1923 that is now Poland. Her first art education classes were in her high school in Germany. Her formal instruction in the arts took placfrom 1980 to 1993 at the University of Alberta. She started using the computer as a media in 1993 and was attracted by the many new programs she found on the internet which allowed her to explore the differences as well as the similarities to the natural way of making art. Her aim was to produce 2D works in the new media without scanning any of her traditional paintings. I pulled her for this week because this set of paintings was all done using Apophysis. I particulary like the golden color one on the left, but the one on the right she has in her living room in Canada as a blown up wall hanging.

Well, I have redeemed myself with this assignment (I think). At least everything is able to be seen. I had fun with the grappa tool. Once I got the hang of controlling the mouse and movements, I found that I could create some interesting designs. I tried to be deliberate with most of the pieces that I created. I used photoshop to adjust the color and/or saturation on some of them. The one that I've chosen to include on the blog is my favorite out of the bunch. I call it, "Love: Life's music". Steven's work frequently focuses on the complex dynamics that form and mold us. Steven is interested in examining those emotions. The name of the work is The Housewife. It is done by Orna Ben-Shoshan. she was born in Israel, but lives in USA now. Orna Ben-Shoshan has been an autodidact artist for the past 30 years. Her artwork was exhibited in numerous locations in the USA, Europe and Israel. As she sais she first completes her work in her mind first. Her goal is to inspire new way of thinking. "Alternative Realities lie parallel to the world we are familiar with" - love the expression!

For my last MOCA post, I wanted to find an artist that really intrigued me. Quite honestly, there are so many, and I am thrilled that Jerry introduced the computer art site for me. Maybe I'll exhibit one of my pieces on there some day.

The artist that I chose this week is Sara G. Umemoto. Sara was born in Mexico City and currently resides in Japan. She began as an artist drawing in childhood and gradually engaging in traditional painting. Once she moved to Japan, the traditional mediums were not at her disposal so she tried her hand at computer art. Sara is a self-taught photographer and digital artist. She mainly works in Photoshop and Corel Draw. She believes that the digital realm offers the greatest possible freedom in expressing visual concepts and graphic emotions. The pieces that I have chosen to share were a couple of my favorites. I thoroughly enjoyed almost all of her portfolios, so it was a hard decision to make. The first piece is entitled "Crime Against Humanity". The second piece is entitled "Farewell". I thought that was fitting (this being our last week and almost my last MOD).

Fractal

This top photo is my third design and I added multiple layers using the formula selection. I have come to realize that I finally got the hang of it.
The second try at the fractal design is in the middle and I truly enjoyed designing this piece and changing over the color patterns using the randomized color and layer selections.

Here is my initial try at the fractal design. This was the hardest project I had to work on because for some reason my computer was only modifying one area of the fractal.

The artist I chose for Week 6 is Anton Kirchner who was born in Germany and began drawing at the age of 5. He is a software engineer but creating art is his side project. He believes that his work is under the influence of several objectives including the addition of cubist partitioning into the components of the images.

I think this tool has relaxing techniques as well. For me to not consider myself creative, this tool made me address the inner creativity that was hidden deep inside.

I love the way that you can make an image out of a million bits of pictures put together and create and amazing work of art. Linerider- My demise!

I am OFFICIALLY at my wits end with this assignment. I have been trying to get a semi-good course for the linerider for a week. When I finally got something that met the requirements (even if minimally) I couldn't record it! Now, I've been at this AGAIN for 2 1/2 hours and I can't take anymore. Jerry, I've called you twice, but didn't leave a message because I feared losing my work, which I did lose in the end. In my effort to get some credit for the assignment I have uploaded what the hypercam did capture. It's not a video. In fact, the camera captured all my clicks and windows that popped up in its view. I can't save what I've done, to give it another go, and I am done with this. So, I will tell you that I wrote a little something for you all in the video, and it goes a little something like this... "UGH...I HATE LINERIDER- GOOD RIDANCE!" :(

I liked this application, but it was frustrating at the same time because I wanted to do more with it than just manipulating mouse movements. I also didnt like how the line would follow your mouse offscreen so while i created something I liked that was all in the center of the picutre, there was this line going from the center offscreen. I think I will have to play with it more, but I like the ones I saved. Above are "Snake" and "French Horn".

Tom McKeith has an MFA in fine art with a concentration in photography. He has been working digitally for about 15 years and has exhibited in Southern California and in Sacramento, California, where he is presently located. He has fine illustrative skills. Many of his ideas are from things that he's seen throughout the years, and some are just spontaneous creations. The image that I am sharing this week is entitled "The 6th Day". The interpretation is intriguing because according to the Bible, on the 6th day God created man.

Ansgard Thomson is 86 years old (born 1923 in Germany) and lives in Canada. She was a traditional painter for many years (and a nurse during the War). She started using the computer in 1993 and as of 1998 after adding the "Wacom Intuos pen " to her tools, now uses the computer only to create her works. (I never heard of Wacom Intuos pen so looked it up-- it is an interactive tablet with a "pen" drawing implement that makes getting your artwork (or whatever) into your computer easier.) This series posted on MOCA is Apophysis-based. I chose my two favorite, both very fluid and evocative pieces to me.

I thought this piece by Giuseppe Mariotti was strong and beautiful, as well as mystical. It is amazing how some people just have a gift, he is self-taught.

Giuseppe Mariotti is an award-winning artist from Italy. His background includes a degree in architecture from the School of Architecture, Rome University.
He offers: "I have drawn comic books and book illustrations, as well as graphic art, and I am continually searching for, and experimenting with, new techniques. I have never attended art school, so I am self-taught. I have become deeply interested in digital art."

Kuniharu Shimizu is a Japanese artist that creates his artwork by using Adobe Illustrator. Shimizu obtained his BFA from the University of Hawaii, and originally created paintings by working from photographs. He decided to begin painting abstractly once he became bored with painting realistically. Shimizu began familiarizing himself with computer graphic programs and became hooked. Kuniharu is also well known for his haiku poems which he says also have an impact in his artistic creations. I have posted one of his works titled” Shadow of Her Shoes.”

This work is done by Ciro Marchetti from Great Britain. He did a lot of work on astronomical themes. Ciro uses photoshop for a lot of his works, that helps to reflect all the imagination he has. He uses different mixture of colors and layers to come up with the final idea. Ciro's art has won a number of prizes at MacWorld competitions. I liked it because it seems for me very clear and bright.

Oliver Wetter signs his art as Fantasio. He says he has painted ever since he could think. He is a 24 year old German who has explored and created in almost all medias, His digital art today is an amalgam of painting, digital illustration, 3-d modelling, photography, and typography. He thinks of his art as "all-genre." He writes, "To describe my art is something difficult, because it's a progressive development towards the perfect use of nearly every media..." He describes his style as maybe Magritte-inspired symbolism. Sixteen of his works are included in this exhibit.

The artist that I selected for this week is Oliver Gili who is from England. Prior to editing his work in adobe photoshop, he uses acrylic and oils to create his artwork and then scans it into his computer. He has exhibited at galleries in his hometown, as well as showing his work via projectors in local eateries, pubs and clubs. Oliver Gili states that "he draws upon the techniques of post-impressionism, the artificial realities of computer game graphics and the intensity of stained glass. Hello everyone, I am sorry for the absence was a little under the weather and am finally regaining my strength and energy.

The artist that I selected for Week 4 is Regina Lafay. At just the age of 19 she began to experiment with painting on top of her prints prior to discovering Adobe photoshop. Her artwork can be seen in various movies, magazines and as tattoo prints on individuals. Her artwork is a healing vessel to those who have experienced abuse or suffer from mental illness.

Regina Lafay began her career in 1990 at age 19 as a photographer. Several years after her career began she discovered Adobe Photoshop, and started adding different elements to her photographs such as paint, smudge tool, and other applications to enhance her images. Lafay has stated that the goal behind her artwork is to help raise awareness and uncover the beauty of raw emotion, in addition to help heal herself and those who feel isolated and alone. Ultimately she hopes that the artwork she creates assists in the education of those who do not understand what many individuals experience as survivors of mental illness and abuse. After viewing several of her images, I definitely got the sense that there is a deeper meaning behind her artwork. I chose “Rebirth” and “Finding Peace” because I enjoyed viewing them, and also because I felt that both of the images and their titles represent the messages and feelings that are the intention behind the artwork of Regina Lafay.

This assigment was a lot of fun, it seems like it would be something really easy at the same time hard to create but for me it was very hard. I have a lop top that does not have a regular mouse, so in order to get this kind of pictures done I had to try a million times so it would look like there were swirls. This is an amazing tool to use this pictures look so amazing and is only by a touch of one tool. I really enjoyed working oni this assigment.

I love this image. It is called Venice. I like the way the colors run into each other. When I think of Venice I think of the City of Water. The blues and purples contrast nice against the orange, aquas and tans. It is beautiful.

All her work are digital photographs that she manipulates. Vadim is an Israel native whose themes, in this collection, or religion based. Most of the pictures are of the old testament, while others are spins on Greek myth. There was nothing on MOCA about the artist so when I searched the internet for some information, I found a list of cameras and lens that he uses, but could not find out what program(s)he uses. He has two cameras - a Canon EOS-350D and a Casio QV-R3. He uses the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. His pictures are a blend of real photographs with digital additions and alterations. The first photo is his variation of Atlas, the second is Icarus followed by Creation Myth.

Week 5 Ultra Fractal

I like this program, but found myself getting frustrated that I could not make the images come out the way I liked. This is the best out of my trials - I call it DNA. I loved the luminosity of the strands in the center combined with the subtle mirror in the background. In most of the photos I did, I used a combination of mapping styles - most common were Kaleidoscope and Ripples. I think this will be the program I play around with the most after the class is over because it has the possibility of creating some really cool desktop backgrounds. That is my photo test for fractals. If the picture looks great on my desktop, then I think its a winner. If it doesn't work on the desktop, then its back to square one.

Kolja Tatic is a Yugoslavian architect who told MOCA that he utilizes 3D rendering programs to create these pictures, but I infer from his website that he uses many different programs when he works. He refers to himself as a painter and an author even when working with photos on the computer. His website has a heartfelt essay he wrote that both laments the slow growth of appreciation for computer-generated art and rejoices in the limitless abilities that "mastery over the graphics software" can give the artists of the world. http://koljat.tripod.com/

These are "ShadowHP" and "Blue Fog" from his current exhibit, "Glass City." Its primary theme to me is of loneliness and serenity. There are shadows and geometric shapes such as spheres in virtually every work.

I chose a Pam Blackstone image this week. I liked the sleek look and feeling of this fractal image. The use of black and white gives it a silver effect. I feel like the ball could be rolling all around, up and down like a child's toy, or one of those office toys you buy for your desk.

I enjoyed this week's assignment of creating different design elements with the fractal tools. There are many effects that can be applied through this method to the images which really enhances the overall appearance of the designs. Pam Blackstone's work on the MOCA website were great examples of fractal design, and I really admired her work. My favorite image of Blackstone's would be "Spooky Moon." I liked how it seemed as though the image was created with many layers, giving it a sense of depth. I created several images using the Ultra Fractal program, and have posted this image of what I thought looked like an infinite staircase to nowhere. I have posted additional images on Fotothing.

The name of that work is Hitchcock Meets Warner Bros. I found it amazing!!!!! it reminds me of a majic cartoon, I don't know why. it is made by Janet Parke. She is known at Ballet Memphis (Tennessee) as a dancer, choreographer and teacher. However, she has been also known as an established fractal artist. Janet won a lot of prizes and exhibited a lot of her collections. She was actually almost hte first one who explored UltraFractal and posted a lot of tutorials on that. That work was completely done in UltraFractal. well, more inspirations for me :)

Glanfyll Lewis started experimenting with computer painting in 1994 following the introduction of computers in her architectural practice. She encouraged diversity in her work starting from the premise that the element of chance should be embraced and not ignored and that the complexity of form, spatial arrangements, colours, textures, etc., can lead to an increased potential for accident. She is constantly aware that any study of nature reveals diversity of form and evolving disciplines. She encourages this principle in all of her paintings."

Though I wanted to deviate from a fractal artist, I chose an artist who works primarily with fractals. His work, to me, is amazing. David Makin was born in England in 1962, and began working with fractals in 1999 when he started using "Fractint", an older fractal software. He got hooked to this type of art and began writing his own fractal software. Now, he uses Ultrafractal, which he writes formulas for. He uses 99% of those formulas to create his own prints. He's won multiple awards and has had sevreal published works. Most recently, David Makin has begun working with 2D and 3D IFS fractals including static art and animations. It's amazing to think that he created these pieces using the same software that we used this week.

This weeks assignment wasn't the easiest for me. I loved looking at the pieces that were already posted to the blog. They were exciting to look at! After watching Jerry's videos, I thought that creating these pieces would be a cinch. I love the fractal image that posted on our syllabus and the ones from the MOCA are amazing as well. I thought I would be creating something similar. When I engaged with the program, I found it hard to get subdues colors. I am a lover of bright and intense colors, but I thought that it might be nice to work with some subdues colors because many of the images that I found myself working with were intricate enough. The final images that I created, I think, still have my aesthetic. Since today is the first day of fall, I am choosing to share one of my favorite images that reminds me of fall. Week 4 MOCA

Carol Cooper is a Canadian artist who combines many different aspects of digital technology within her work. Most of Cooper’s art integrates mathematical influences such as fractals and geometric forms; in addition to incorporating various abstract elements. Carol describes herself as a “self-taught artist, and has been creating art digitally since 2001. Carol says that she “embraces digital technology,” and “loves the free-spirited feeling derived when creating abstractly.” I enjoyed viewing all of her work, but I have posted one of my favorites called “What’s in the Pot?” Cooper’s inspiration came from her mother’s home cooking, and describes the piece as a representation of the “familiar aroma when you entered the kitchen, a staple meal that you had at least ONCE a week. A meal that always tasted the same, no matter how many times it was cooked and served, a meal that MIGHT not even have a recipe.” I felt that Carol Cooper’s artwork related well with this weeks assignment.

Siegfried Schreck

This week I chose Siegfried Schreck. He lives in Hamburg, Germany. Besides being a digital photographer, he is an artist, poet, and songwriter. He currently has a number of art exhibits throughout Germany. He uses Photoshop, Picture Publisher and other graphic programs in his digital work. His art embodies a free and generous spirit. He is quoted as saying, "I feel myself as a warrior between poetry and painting," he writes.

To me, his pictures look like modern Picassos. I really liked "Think Machine" (the picture on the right) because of the focal point in the center accentuated by the blurred background. The other photo is called "Circus" and I just really liked the use of color. I am not one for modern art and geometric shapes, but I found his art interesting.

To keep with this week's Fractal theme, I selected Juliette Gribnau, from the Netherlands. She uses Ultra Fractal and Xenodream (if you follow the links to her website (for graphic art and web design) there is a link to download Xenodream and other software as well). She was introduced to computer art by her children and applied art training from her younger years. What I like about her "Deep Sea" is its dreaminess and the soft colors, (which I had much trouble trying to find in Ultra Fractal). Gribnau's "Quad Spiral is just sharp". I really like how she extends the spiral right off the apparent page. I think her sense of space and color is just very attractive.

Week 5 - Fractals

Fractals are fun... I think I may prefer Apophysis, but once I got the hang of this I was able to do some neat designs. I ended up with about 14 different designs over the course of an afternoon and interestingly, everyone in my family liked different ones. I've posted more on Fotothing. Here are the two everyone mostly agreed upon. The dark blue is "Forbidden Forest" and the other I call "Anticipation" (since no matter what we thought it looked like, it gives the impression that more is yet to come.) I wish I could remember how I got to these designs but I was mostly clicking by instinct. I do recommend messing with the different parameter numbers- and negative numbers can do VERY interesting things.

This week I chose another German artist, 24 year old Oliver Wetter. Oliver has used many types of mediums; however, he feels that the digital realm has little to no boundaries. Oliver thinks of his art as "all genre". The collection that I took this piece from was called "Fantasia", and it consists of a mixture of painting, digital illustration, 3-d modeling, photography, and typography.

I call these pieces "The beginning of Autumn". The first image is almost the original. I say almost because I forgot to take a picture of the original coloring. This is how it looked but I went and changed the colors and played with the saturation and blurred it a bit. Then I started to play with the different variations. These are the two I really liked. I love them warm colors. I really thought this was going to be harder than it was. I had fun with this.

This photo is by Giovanni Auriemma. He was born in Naples, Italy; graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples with a major in scenography. Computer graphics he learned by himslef. I call this one "Wormhole". I enjoyed this program - the symmetry that can be created is fantastic. I was having a problem deciding which one out of the ones I made should be my desktop, but "Wormhole" is definitely my favorite. It's very sci-fi.

Carole K. Boyd's art is created on the computer but is hand-painted starting with a blank screen and applying paint or pencil. Carole creates her paintings and drawings using the Microsoft Paint program and a mouse, using only a paintbrush, a pencil, a spray can, a fill can and a palette of colors which she mixes.
Carols paintings are not altered, manipulated or painted photographs, nor are filters used to creatCarole's subjects range from animals, landscapes and still life to Native American themes.

Apophysis aka Therapy Session

This assignment came at just the right time! I started using Apophysis today, and as I engaged, it was transformed from a simple computer program to a therapy session. What a blessing in such an unexpected way. The endless variations, colors, curves, and lines that I was able to explore to manifest what my heart was realizing. My image represents love, passion, anger, confusion and betrayal pulling on the heart strings of life...my life. I hope you like it. I'll be posting many more on fotothing throughout the week.

Week #2 (a little behind) Thomas Demuth is a 3d artist from Germany. He was born 1965 near Hamburg. He uses 3d rendering software to create photo-abstract images based on polygon mesh structures. Demuth therefore calls his style "Polygonismus", and calls the concept behind this style "The Economy of Polygons". It is a dramatic and profound style that gives the artist's work psychological depth and photo-abstract intensity at the same time. His themes range widely from religion to anthropology to terror in the modern world.

Week 4 -Apophysis

The Apophysis tool used in this week’s assignment provided an interesting way to modify many different fractals within the program. The fractals; which are defined as “rough or fragmented geometric shapes,” can be changed in many ways with the different features found within the program. I enjoyed scrolling through the vast amount of fractal choices, and found many different and interesting designs. I choose this design because I liked how the center of the image resembled a heart. Some of the modifications that I made were changing the hues, brightening the image, utilizing the saturation tool, and raising the quality of the image.

These photos are from her collection called "Voodoo Mamma". Jacqueline Okuhara studied art history in Europe and Canada but she specialized in textiles and jewelry making which is taught in schools for several years. After a long while, she decided to start focusing on her own art. She taught herself how to use a computer graphics program, although the site did not specify which one. She does not use scanning - everything is drawn and painted using filters, masks, fills and the like to create her images. She says the images are based off of her "own life experiences and personal preferences."

I liked the way she uses bold colors and lines to create a very strong feminine character in her work.

This is Darth Vader. I really like the black and red with white/silver accents. I also love the way the symmetry came out.
The Muppets - this one is just fun and I was tickled to see the result after the action.

I liked this one a lot too because of the shapes that came out after the rotation and distortion. This is the Star Trek logo for the eleventh movie that just came out this summer.

Apophysis week 4

OK, Apophysis is awesome. It downloaded in about two seconds and is loads of fun. I spent a long time with it yesterday! Here are my two favorites from my first experiments, with a few more on fotothing but they are not as good. I call one "frog prince" (though my family calls it "evil pumpkin teacher"); the other is "starflower."

For what it may be worth (and Jerry please let me know how wrong I am on # 3) : Apophysis (1) does take longer to "think" than Photoshop so be patient (2) my scripts section saved in a totally different place than Apophysis so I had to hunt for it (apparently that can happen according to the Apophysis site) and (3) if there's a "restore" or "step backward" button, I can't find it-- so if you like something, save (render) it before you try doing something else to it (and that takes time too), because I could never get it back exactly. You can "undo" script actions but not all other modifications. However all that being said, this is really cool.

Week 4 MOCA assignment

Ernst Brunzlik, born in 1936, lives in Germany and Turkey. He apparently changed careers from a long-time editor in a press agency, to photographer and then to digital artist. His works are playful and full of color. He does both abstract and realistic pieces but seems to always try to engage the viewers' imagination. In researching him, he says, " Colour plays an important role in my pictures because it invokes far-flung associations, creating new picture-worlds for the fantasy of whoever views the images. In the allegedly realistic pictures, I am trying to create a positive tension by collaging the object(s) with a contrasting background. In this manner shifting reality towards fantasy." He creates some nice 3-D type effects with those blurred backgrounds and bright central subjects.

I had much trouble deciding which of his photos to post because I liked so many, but finally selected " Waterworld2" from the MOCA site and "Sanskrit" (the one that looks like flying opals), which I found elsewhere on the Web while trying to find out what software he utilizes (unsuccessful there, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's Photoshop.) What I liked is that some of his pieces made me catch my breath (and as usual, wonder how he does it), but also, just a few made me say, "you know, I bet someone in my class could produce something very similar to that with the tools we already have." This week I came across Gulnur Guvenc, from Turkey. She uses photoshop and says that she is inspirationed by the Byzantine. The image that I chose to show for you all this week has been created in photoshop as well. It consists of layers of scanned seashells and photos of friends. I haven't tried layering pictures yet, and was very inspired when I saw this piece. I hope you like it.

Cornelia Yoder is a Fractal artist. This piece I choose is from April of 2007 and is titled Will o the Wisps. I did some research on Fractal art because this is the first time I have even heard the term. I found that Fractal art is created by calculating fractal objects and representing the calculation results as still images, animations, music, or other media. I needed to go further because I still wasn’t sure what a fractal object was, so I looked that up too! A fractal is generally "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole. So now I have a better understanding of the process that Cornelia goes through when she creates her art.

The image itself is beautiful and starry. It's dream like with blue, white and purple coloring. One of my favorites this week.

For week 3, I decided to post artwork created by artist Diane Vetere. A Canadian native, Vetere studied fine arts at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. She defines her fascination with producing computer generated art as an “ongoing love affair with the computer” that “allows me to see things in exciting new ways-heightening perceptions and challenging conceptions.” Vetere describes her art as a manipulation of color with an element of surprise and discovery in each piece. She began using programs such as MacPaint in the early 1980’s, and now uses Photoshop; in addition to applying a technique that involves using a flatbed scanner to create three dimensional images which she sometimes will incorporate into her work. Diane Vetere’s work appealed to me because it is mostly abstract, and reminded me of this week’s assignment involving the manipulation of ordinary photos to create a similar abstract feel.

Week 3- Paint Machine

I love the assignment this week. It's a lot of fun. The more I explore Photoshop, the more I realize how much I have to learn, but what's more, I learn how much more I WANT to learn. The previously posted images on this topic were very inspirational to me. I love the art that was created from an image started out completely different. I created a few images that I will post on fotothing, but the one that I have chosen to share with you all is my favorite. The original image is a veggie face. The image that I created from that I call "Reminisce". The colors are vibrant (just like I like them), and it reminds me of the drawings I used to create as a child where you swirl your crayon around on the paper and color each selection in a different color. This work is by Bogdan Zwir,a photographic artist from St. Petersburg, Russia. The most amazing thing is that he did not recieve any special education in either photography or arts. His secret is to invent unreal life with the realistic perfomance. Bogdan looks at pictures as at the real creatures with their past, present and future. All of them have some questions left; it is not always obvious if it is a photo or painting in his works. I picked the one above because, as a Russian, I think I can understand what the artist was trying to express. It doesn't say any details about the programs he uses. He brings "absurd" to its sense, that's how I would express his work.

This was a photo of me and my friend. You can notice the shadow of two people seating in the back. The whole mess that covers those two calm creatures in back symbolizes our crazy life with its events that surround us.

that was an amazing picture of the flower from my tea cup. But by turning on the imagination and the super Photoshop, the mystery world inside of it became vivid for everyone ;) Honestly, I love that pic because I can see a lot in it.

Week 3: Painting Machine Action/Filters

The "painting machine" action created in Photoshop takes an ordinary picture and changes it significantly. With the use of many different filters within the program, a seemingly ordinary image can be transformed to an abstract work of art. While creating the action it was interesting to see the results that each of the filters had on the picture. The potential for changing the image is endless when working with this action, and I also learned that even after applying the action to the image it is possible to apply additional filters to futher change the look. I choose to take this image of a tiger and alter it to what you see posted. I have uploaded additional images on fotothing.

I thought I would pick something bright and cheerful. This is called Blooming by Fabio Vicenti. I can not find any information on what was used or how or why he created this image. To me it looks like a bunch of clear bingo chips layered and then altered in a photoshop program. It could possibly be all the colors of Fabio's garden back in Italy. I also chose this image because it had an Andy Warhol feeling to it. Maybe because I just finished that project and I have all the bright colors in my mind still. Anyway, I like the artist choice of colors and the blending/ blurring of them.

Week 3 Museum of Computer Art

The artist I chose this week is Rob Hassan. He owns a graphic arts studio near Chicago and he prefers learning independently while keeping up with the latest trends and techniques. His work is transformerd using 3D rendering software some of which he draws by hand. He believes that we are in the "beginning stages of a digital renaissance". I can appreciate the way each of his photos are each unique in nature. None of them seem to be a part of a collection so to speak. There is another photo that he has that almost appears to be something that would be transformed into a film by Tim Burton

Week 3 MOCA assignment

This week I selected an Indian artist named Shilpa, who says, "I'm interested in mixed media; i.e., a combination of traditional art and digital painting. I paint on paper, scan it in Photoshop and use it in my painting. Nature is my 'GURU'. I find very interesting textures, forms, colors in nature. I always try to copy Nature."

What I liked best about Shilpa's art is the directional lighting and intense coloring of the subjects, especially in image 5, "Morning Light", image 6, "Only Love" and image 7, "Planet Green." There are indeed many different textures in some of these works, which makes looking into them a pleasure.

I finally was able to load Photoshop CS4. I watched several video clips. This is my Oil Painting. I figured out how to change it to a jpg image in order to get it to the blog. This took several hours and one minor breakdown. I am having a lot of technical trouble with this class. However, I did it and I love the effect. It is amazing what this program can do. I am now going to attempt to learn how to create my Andy Warhol image.....Pamela

Ciro Marchetti

Ciro Marchetti was born in Great Britain but moved to Miami, Florida where he is the president of a graphic design firm. He uses Adobe Photoshop and stresses the importance of the use of texture in his art. He states, "Another important feature is texture; I very deliberately break up the computer clean surfaces of the images by painting through a selection of custom prepared textured alpha channels. This adds a controllable tactile surface quality to the imagery where appropriate; i.e. rusted metal, rough stone." These photos were taken from his collection called Astronomical Portraits and Exotic Machines. in which he bleneded fantasy elements with scientific instruments of the past such as compasses and sextants. Quoted from the MOCA website, " This is an art of "exotic machines, somewhat dated in style and engineering, yet capable of function beyond the current capacity of today's real world science." "

What I like most about these pictures is the level of imagination and creativity that went into making these. They are truly gorgoeous with the use of color and astrological symbolism. the two pictures I chose were "Golden Gazebos" and "Peacock Lagoon".

Oil Painting

I found this picture of Ireland online and found that it was the best out of the three that I did. My first attempt was with a picture of an Austrian castle surrounded by lush landscape, but after the oil painting effect, I found it to be too blurry. My second attempt was a german building, and for this one I used the preset action that I said from my first trial. Again, it came out too blurry for my liking. This is my third attempt and definitely the best out of the three.

I used this picture of Johnny Depp as my basis for the warhold project. The most difficult part of this project was trying to decide what colors I should use and in what way. I also tried doing two others - Angelina Jolie and Zachary Quinto and found that with Angelina's picture there was not enough definition. with Zachary Quinto's photo I could not make the colors work for me.
